The Art and Power Behind the Bend

At Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing, our press brakes are powerful, programmable, and backed by real experience.

Bending might not be the flashiest part of metal fabrication, but it’s one of the most critical. One misaligned bend can throw off an entire build, and that’s why we, at Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing, take it seriously.

In this blog, we’re breaking down the history of a press brake, how it works, what our equipment is capable of, and what that means for your next project.

What is the History of the Press Brake

The press brake has undergone significant evolution since its 19th-century origins.

The first known version, called the cornice brake, was patented in 1882. It was a manual machine, built from cast iron and wood, that used a leaf-style mechanism to bend sheet metal along a straight line.

Back then, forming a bend required sand, lead shot, and plenty of physical labor; workers would pound the sheet over a mold until it took shape. Fast forward to today, and press brakes are now highly advanced, CNC-controlled machines capable of producing precise and repeatable bends.

It’s a dramatic evolution that reflects just how vital sheet metal bending is to modern metal fabrication.

What Is a Press Brake?

In simple terms, a press brake is a machine that bends metal with precision using force, tooling, and control. It allows us to transform into U-shaped, V-shaped, or custom-formed parts, such as channels, brackets, and enclosures.

There are two primary bending methods:

  • Air Bending: A punch presses the material into a V-die without bottoming out, allowing for flexible angles and faster cycle times. It’s a quicker and more adaptable method

  • Bottom Bending: The punch presses the material all the way into the die, forming the final angle. This method provides accuracy but requires more pressure.

Our CNC Bystronic Press Brakes Feature:

From small brackets to large industrial panels, our press brakes handle a wide range of gauges, materials, and part sizes with high repeatability and precision.

Our CNC Bystronic Press Brakes Feature:

  • Capacity: 88 to 255 tons
  • Bending lengths: 10.1 to 13.4 feet
  • BySoft Cell Control Bend software
  • Dynamic crowning for bend consistency
  • Hydraulic clamping systems for faster setups

We also run RAS Systems Megabend and Gigabend with .250" capacity and up/down folding capabilities, giving us flexibility for large panels and complex geometries.

High Quality Flat Rolled Steel Supplied by Alliance Steel

Alliance Fabrication and Manufacturing uses high-quality steel supplied by our sister company,  Alliance Steel. With an industry-leading inventory of materials, including hot rolled steel, hot rolled pickled and oiled (HRPO), hot rolled dry, cold rolled steel, coated steel products, and 300/400 series stainless steel, we’re prepared to handle a wide range of custom metal fabrication projects.

Through strong relationships with steel mills across the U.S., Alliance Steel sources material that meets your exact requirements for quality, gauge, and finish. This ensures that every fabricated steel product we deliver starts with material you can count on.

Each component we fabricate goes through a rigorous quality assurance process. Our quality team brings years of experience to every job, verifying that every pound of steel we process meets your specifications. From sourcing to final product, we deliver reliable and repeatable results backed by industry expertise.
